About Us

In 1992, McDowell’s Funeral Home, Inc. was founded by John and Sallie McDowell in Griffin, Georgia. United in Holy Matrimony in 1987, together they have 4 children: Kim McDowell, Carla Hendricks and Felicia Williams, as well as their son: John McDowell, Jr.

John E. McDowell, Sr. was our C.E.O. and had been in the funeral industry since the age of 16. After graduating high school, he proudly served in the United States Army. Mr. McDowell is a Vietnam War Veteran and earned a Bronze Star with 3 Clusters and was able to achieve the rank of Staff Sergeant in only 2 years.

Upon his return from abroad, Mr. McDowell followed in his father’s footsteps and returned to the family business. He also became the first member of the family to be educated and licensed in the funeral profession after graduating from Gupton-Jones College of Mortuary Sciences in 1974. He passed on October 27, 2025 and was laid to rest on November 3rd, 2025. He was our Veteran founder.

Sallie L. McDowell is our C.F.O. and has been working in the industry since the early 1980’s. She graduated from Atlanta Technical School with a degree in Business Management, and later furthered her education at DeKalb College for Business Administration.

Their children, Carla, Felicia and John, Jr. are Licensed Morticians as well. John McDowell, Jr. currently serves as the company Funeral Director for Continuous Charge. All three children are graduates of Gupton-Jones College of Mortuary Sciences.
