IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Mother Nellie
Ruth Holland-Garland
May 31, 1923 – November 29, 2025
After 102 remarkable years, Nellie Ruth (Holland) Garland closed her eyes for the final time on November 29th, 2025. Having witnessed a century of history, Nell often remarked that her greatest blessing was seeing her grandchildren and great-grandchildren begin their own journeys. Her gentle wisdom about the family history and values will serve as a guiding light for us all, reminding us of the importance of connection and the legacy we carry forward. As we navigate our own paths, her stories will inspire us to cherish our roots and strengthen the bonds that unite us. Each lesson she imparts is a thread in the fabric of our shared identity, weaving us closer together.
Mrs. Nell Garland was born in Griffin, Georgia, on May 31st, 1923, and was raised by her great-uncle, the late Joe Booker. In her twenties, she united in marriage with Clifford Garland Sr. This union was blessed with eight children. “Miss Nell” (as people affectionately call her) worked 40 years at Spalding County Hospital as a housekeeper and eventually became a nurse’s aide, where she helped patients of all ages to perform the most basic daily tasks. Her compassionate nature and dedication to her work earned her the respect and admiration of both her colleagues and the families of her patients she cared for. This commitment not only enhanced the quality of care she provided but also inspired others on the healthcare team to adopt a similar approach. Her journey reflected a profound understanding of the importance of empathy in healing, making a lasting impact on the lives she touched.
At an early age, “Miss Nell” professed her faith in Jesus Christ and joined Corinth Baptist Church, where she was a dedicated member. She found joy in her church family and in serving on the Mother’s Board, often by assisting with church activities, mentoring younger women, and supporting the pastor. On February 18th, 2024, she was honored at her church as their longest-living member.
In addition to her Great Uncle Joe Booker, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford Garland Sr; two sons, Clifford Garland, Jr. and Ronald Garland; a daughter, Gloria Jean Fuller and a granddaughter, Phyllis Martin.
She is survived by her children: Harold Garland (Delphia), Donald Garland, Wayne Garland (Dianne), Gail Garland and Tyrus Garland; Grandchildren: Tavis Garland, Gerald Trice LaShawn Virden, Matthew Fuller, Kennith Fuller, Jr, Kimzie Garland, Cliftoria Garland, Marcus Garland, Joshua Garland, Crystal Hightower, Stephanie Garland, Tasha Garland, Ronrico Garland, Jasmine Garland, Kantricia Jester, Jemarko Parker, Onterio Hightower, Metrellis Barlow, and Natasha Johnson as well as 26 great grandchildren, and a host of devoted nieces, nephews and friends. Special Grandkids: Christopher Murphy and Shaquanna Gaddis.
Although grief-stricken, comfort comes from knowing her love of the Lord and from those whom she so deeply touched. Her resilience inspired those around her, reminding them that even in the darkest times, hope could emerge. As she shared her stories and wisdom, the warmth of her spirit provided solace to many, guiding them toward the bright light.
