OBITUARY 

Ms. Mamie Lue Smith-Anthony was born on December 3rd, 1934, to the union of the late Milton and Irene Smith in Fayetteville, Georgia.

At an early age, Ms. Mamie, affectionately known as “Soot,” accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior at Holly Grove AME Church. She faithfully served as a stewardess and was also a dedicated member of the Pastor’s Aide.

Mamie was the oldest living female member of Holly Grove A.M.E. Church, where she was honored in 2019 for more than 40+ years of outstanding service to the church. She loved the Lord deeply and cherished gathering with other believers. Her faith was a meaningful part of her life, and she sought each day to live in a way that was pleasing to the Lord Jesus.

Mamie was a devoted and hardworking woman throughout her life. She took great pride in her work and was committed to everything she did. After many years of dedicated service, she retired from M&A in Peachtree City, leaving behind a lasting legacy of excellence and commitment.

She will forever be remembered for her loving spirit, her unwavering faith, and the impact she made on the lives of those around her. Her memory will continue to live on through her family, church, and community.

Mamie enjoyed bringing people together and especially loved hosting cookouts and preparing meals for her family and friends. She was well known for her delicious sweet potato cobbler, turnip greens, and cabbage, dishes that brought comfort and joy to everyone fortunate enough to enjoy them.

She also had a love for gardening and took great pride in growing fresh vegetables. She proudly sold her homegrown produce to select local restaurants, sharing the fruits of her labor with her community.

She transitioned peacefully into eternal rest on Saturday, August 8, 2026, at 11:30 a.m. at Spaulding Post Acute.

In addition to her parents, Mamie was preceded in death by her children, Willie Frank Stargell and Royce Stargell, and her brothers, Joe Louis Smith and John Frank Smith.

She leaves to cherish her precious memories one daughter, Helen Mathis, Atlanta, GA; her sons, Robert Lee (Jackie) Willis, Atlanta, GA; Eugene Smith, Griffin, GA; Freddy (Brenda) Stargell, Hampton, GA; and Robin Stargell, Griffin, GA.

The Grandchildren: Stephanie (Van) Clemmons, Bernard (Alisha) Mathis, Tiffany Mathis, Kiashunna (Dreshon) Carter, Shaniya (Antonio) Kanonu, Brandon (Keiosha) Smith, Bryant Smith, Nita (Nicholas) Mack, Willie Stargell, Dianise Stargell, Denise Stargell, Robert Jr. Willis, Michelle (Demarco) Stenson, and Antonio (Nashedra) Stargell, and 33 great-grandchildren.

Her Siblings include: Lee (Willie) Murry, Bernice Chaney, and Luevon (Nervy George) Forts. 

She also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and dear friends who will miss her dearly and forever cherish the memories they shared with her.
