Master Sergeant Lewis A. Canty, a cherished member of the Goulds and Zebulon communities, passed away on November 28th, 2024. He was born in Concord, Georgia on April 13th, 1937, to Richard Canty, Jr. and Annie Lee Blackmon, and was one of five siblings: Aileen, Vera, Andrew and Aldean.

Lewis' life journey began in Concord before he moved to Goulds, Florida.  He graduated from Mays Senior High School and later married his devoted wife, Ozella C. Canty. Together, they enjoyed 62 years filled with love, laughter and steadfast support.

In 1958, Lewis joined the Air Force, serving his country for 23 years and achieving the rank of Master Sergeant. Throughout his military career, he and Ozella traveled the globe while raising their three sons: Larry, Timothy and Kenneth.

After retiring from the Air Force in 1975, Lewis and Ozella returned to Goulds, where they raised their family in the home he built. His entrepreneurial spirit was evident when he founded the Appliance Doctor, offering repair services to the communities of Goulds and Miami-Dade County.

Lewis was passionately dedicated to his community. He served on the Goulds Municipal Advisory Committee, the Goulds Community Action Agency, and took on the role of President of the Goulds Community Developement Corporation. After Hurricane Andrew, he expanded into real estate, creating Canco Rentals to provide housing for families in need. His notable contributions to Goulds included the development of Goulds Park, various community spaces, and the construction of the Goulds Shopping Plaza.

He is survived by his son: Kenneth; daughter-in-law: Barbara, and grandchildren: Tasha, Kenneth II, Danielle, Artie, Brittany, Davian, Johari and Omari. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife: Ozella; sons: Larry and Timothy; and siblings: Aldean, Veral and Andrew.

A man of ambition, kindness and unwavering commitment to his community, Lewis Canty will be profoundly missed. He will be laid to rest on the family property, a fitting resting place for a man who devoted his life to creating a brighter future for both his family and his community.
