Listen to Obituary

Mr. Freddie Matthews was born February 7th, 1959 to the late John Mays Matthews, Sr. and Nellie Bell Hall Matthews. He was the fourth of six children.

Mr. Matthews accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior at an early age when he joined Rising Star Missionary Baptist Church, where he served on both the Junior and Senior Usher's Board.

Mr. Freddie Matthews, affectionately known as "Hard Rock" was educated in the Griffin-Spalding County School System. Freddie was a Construction Worker and a strong man. He would tell you that he helped with the construction of Highway 285 walls. "Hard Rock" hurt his back on the job and transitioned to doing other light forms of work. He took life very easy and had many friends. He loved music and really liked to dance. Freddie "Rock" loved all kinds of sports too. He was especially fond of the Atlanta Braves, Atlanta Falcons and the Georgia Bulldogs – How Bout Them Dawgs! – He also loved playing Chess and would challenge anyone to a game/duel. Hard Rock patterned his life after the old T.V. sitcoms "Daniel Boone" and "Rifle Men".

Mr. Freddie Matthews "Hard Rock" entered into rest Sunday, October 15th, 2023 at Wellstar North Fulton Medical Center.

He was preceded in death by his Brother: Lamar Murphy; Grandparents: Wheaton Hall, Mattie Lou Blalock and Florine Matthews; Aunts: Julia Blalock, Emma Louise Simmons, Mattie Simmons Rucker, Elaine Hall, Mary Edith Holmes and Martha Lee Williams; Uncles: Bobby Simmons, J.B. Simmons, K.D. Simmons and Walter Lee Simmons; Nieces: Quameriah Barkley and China Freeman; and Nephew: Telvin Matthews.

Freddie "Rock" would sing his favorite childhood song, "This little light of Mine, I'm going to let it shine"! Those left to cherish his loving memories are three (3) Brothers and two (2) Sisters: Tony Matthews, Terry Matthews, John Matthews, Joyce Matthews and Linda Matthews Banks; four (4) Aunts: Mary Ann Goodrum, Gloria Blalock, Betty Simmons and Kathy Rawls; Bonus Brother: Zackery Edwards; along with special friends and special family, and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins that will miss Freddie "Hard Rock" Dearly!
